Help Your Child Cope with a New Baby

There will come a time when you will have a new baby. If you have an older child, he or she may feel neglected because you are putting too much attention on the arrival of the baby. He may also feel confused about it. Because you want your older child to accept it, here is what you should do.

Tell Him What Is Going To Happen

Before the baby arrives, it is best to let your older child understand what is going on, what will happen, and how this will not affect your relationship with him. This way, your child will not feel jealous towards the baby, and may even anticipate the arrival of his new baby brother or sister. Making him excited with his new responsibility as an older sibling is a good way for him to accept the baby.

Let Him Share Responsibility

When the baby arrives, give your older child some small task or activity involving the baby. Because of this, instead of feeling neglect or harboring ill feelings toward his baby brother, he will feel that he has to take care of him. When your older child interacts with the baby, praise the former so he will associate the experience as a positive one.

Spend Time with Your Child

Do not forgo your play time with your older child just because a new baby has arrived. Even if you are tired, always make it a point to bond with your child so he will still feel loved.

Having a new baby in the house is inevitable, but that does not mean that you should shrink your responsibilities with your older child. If you cannot handle it by yourself, make sure that your husband pitches in the responsibility. Do not carry this weight alone because you are a family.
